Where to Stay in Key West Without a Car

You can stay almost anywhere in the Key West area without personally owning or renting a car.

That does not mean every location works equally well.

There is a major difference between:

Walking outside and being where you want to be

and

Having a hotel shuttle, taxi, rideshare or bus available whenever you want to go somewhere.

Both are car-free.

Only the first is truly walkable.

For the classic first-time trip, Downtown is where not having a car becomes an advantage instead of a compromise.

You can walk to a large share of the historic core, waterfront, restaurants, nightlife and excursion departures.

You also avoid paying to park a vehicle that may spend several days sitting still.

If you fly into EYW, taxis and rideshare provide a direct airport transfer, so there is no need to rent a car solely to reach a central hotel.

Old Town is highly workable without a car, but inspect the address.

Ask:

• How far is the property from Duval?
• How far is it from the Historic Seaport?
• Is the route comfortable for the people in your party?
• Will you happily walk it twice a day?
• Will you still happily walk it in heat or after dinner?

This is especially relevant for older travelers, families and visitors with mobility limitations.

A location does not become practical merely because a mapping app labels the walk possible.

A New Town stay can work without a rental vehicle.

Several hotels currently advertise scheduled shuttles to areas such as Duval Street, Old Town or Smathers Beach.

But ask about the current shuttle before committing.

You want to understand:

• where it drops off,
• whether reservations are needed,
• how often it operates,
• how late it runs,
• and what happens when you want to return outside the schedule.

Do not choose a remote hotel because it “has a shuttle” and stop the research there.

The details determine whether the shuttle is genuinely useful.

This is the biggest distinction.

City on-demand transit currently covers both Key West and Stock Island. Major Stock Island resorts also advertise Downtown shuttle service.

That gives you options.

But if most days involve going into Old Town, you are still building transportation into the itinerary.

Stock Island makes much more sense without a car when:

• the resort itself is part of the trip,
• you are leaving on fishing or boating trips nearby,
• you plan only occasional Old Town visits,
• or a property's shuttle schedule lines up well with how you travel.

A good car-free trip does not need one perfect mode of transportation.

It can use several.

Walking

Default for Downtown and much of Old Town.

Hotel shuttle

Useful for scheduled trips from outer hotels.

Taxi or rideshare

Useful when the shuttle timetable does not fit.

City transit

Key West Rides provides an on-demand shared option within its Key West/Stock Island zone.

Bicycle

Useful for people comfortable riding and wanting more independent range, but it should not be treated as the universal solution for every traveler.

If you're planning the whole trip without a car, check these before paying:

1. Where exactly is the accommodation?
2. Can I comfortably reach my main daytime area on foot?
3. Does the property operate transportation, and what is the current schedule?
4. What is my backup when the shuttle doesn't work for my plans?
5. Do I actually want to commute into Old Town every day?

That fifth question often changes the choice.

1. Downtown

The least transportation planning.

2. Central Old Town

Nearly as convenient, often quieter.

3. Outer Old Town

Good if walking distance fits your party.

4. New Town

Completely workable with shuttle/rideshare planning.

5. Stock Island

Workable, but choose it because the stay itself justifies the transport tradeoff.

If you know you do not want a car, spend more attention — and potentially more of the lodging budget — on location.

A cheaper room that creates four taxi rides a day is not necessarily cheaper.

More importantly, it changes how the trip feels.

For a first Key West visit, being able to step outside and start exploring is worth treating as an amenity.
