Hotels and resorts: easiest to understand
A hotel is usually the least complicated choice.
You know who manages the property, where to check in and whom to call when something goes wrong.
Resorts add pools, restaurants, spas, transportation and other facilities that can make the property itself part of the vacation.
Best for
- First-time visitors.
- Short stays.
- Couples.
- Travelers who want services and staffed facilities.
- Families choosing larger resort properties or suites.
Good to know
Key West hotel pricing can involve more than the room rate.
Parking charges and resort/destination fees exist at many properties and can materially affect the total.
Those fees are dynamic, so compare the final stay cost rather than simply the first nightly figure shown.
Guesthouses and inns: the most distinctive Key West option
Old Town has a substantial number of smaller historic inns and guesthouses.
For the right traveler, they offer something a large hotel cannot replicate: porches, gardens, converted historic houses, small pools and a more residential setting.
Best for
- Couples.
- Repeat visitors.
- Travelers who value atmosphere over a long amenities list.
- People who want to stay inside historic Old Town.
Think twice if
You require:
- a large elevator-served building,
- extensive parking,
- a large resort pool,
- multiple restaurants,
- standardized room layouts,
- or substantial family-oriented facilities.
Historic buildings can also mean stairs and unusual layouts.
Some guesthouses are adults-only or adult-oriented, so family travelers should check the individual policy rather than treating “guesthouse” as a universal category.
Vacation rentals: valuable when you actually need the space
Vacation rentals become compelling for:
- larger families,
- multi-generational groups,
- several couples traveling together,
- long stays,
- visitors who want a kitchen and laundry,
- or travelers who simply prefer living-room space to hotel facilities.
They can be particularly attractive in Key West because historic homes and cottages are part of the city's visual character.
But vacation rentals require more research than hotels.
Short-term rental legality matters in Key West
The City of Key West licenses residential rentals and maintains current maps of transient and non-transient licensed properties. The City specifically advises the public to establish that a vacation rental is valid before sending payment.
That warning is worth taking literally.
A property appearing on a large booking platform does not, by itself, replace checking the rental's actual terms and eligibility.
Check the exact property’s licensed rental status and stated minimum stay.
Stock Island follows a different regulatory path
Do not automatically apply City of Key West residential-rental rules to a property on Stock Island.
Monroe County maintains separate rules for vacation rentals in unincorporated areas. The County states explicitly that not every area permits rentals of less than 28 days and that zoning and permit requirements matter.
A useful rule by trip type
Couple, 3 nights, first visit: Hotel or guesthouse
Couple, historic atmosphere priority: Guesthouse / small inn
Family, 3–4 nights: Hotel suite or larger resort
Family, week-long trip: Suite or professionally managed rental
Two or three couples: Vacation rental or multi-bedroom suite
Resort/pool vacation: Hotel/resort
Month-long stay: Vacation rental
Need guaranteed daily hotel services: Hotel
Want a kitchen but dislike rental complexity: Suite/aparthotel-style property
Do not assume vacation rental means cheaper
The price comparison changes after:
- cleaning charges,
- taxes,
- minimum stays,
- service fees,
- parking,
- and the fact that a large property may only make financial sense when its bedrooms are actually being used.
A couple staying three nights may be better served by a well-located hotel.
Two families staying a week may reach the opposite conclusion.
The practical answer
Choose a hotel or guesthouse when location, simplicity and service matter most.
Choose a vacation rental when the space itself solves a real trip problem.
Do not choose a rental merely because it looks more like “living like a local.”
A legal, stable, well-managed property in the right location matters far more than the label on the listing.
